Faces of mine

Faces of mine, a series of oversized portraits, oscillates in their visual appearance between photography and painting. All the images are originally Polaroids, miniature photographs of moments, created by exploring the possibilities of instant photography and the self-portrait in a broader sense.

The photographs were not captured by means of a self-timer, but the camera was operated by hand. They emerge from the artist’s freely playing with both the medium of photography as well and the self-portrait, the latter merely an approximate idea at the moment of creation and indeed created blindly and intuitively.

In the enlargements, the images are transformed into huge surfaces -­­ faces. The microscopic resolution enables accentuates the painterly color structure of the instant image, from which the sensual, finely structured surfaces derive their characteristic coloration and poetry.

The fact that all these images are portraits of one and the same person is not immediately evident – each moment appears as a new possibility, a new face. Minimalist and without previous set-up, they subvert any notion of a person’s constant exterior identity. The personal appearance is decoded as a moment, as an interaction with a constantly changing surface.
